SickKids to gradually resume scheduled clinical activities as of June 8

Summary:

SickKids has received approval from Ontario Health to begin the gradual resumption of scheduled surgeries and procedures as of June 8.

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has received approval from Ontario Health to begin the gradual resumption of scheduled surgeries and procedures as of June 8.

We recognize that the delays have been difficult for patients and their families since the scaling back of surgeries and other procedures on March 16. It’s also been challenging for our physicians and clinicians who are eager to provide care. However, it is important to emphasize that this restart will be gradual, with the safety of our patients, families and staff always being the top priority.

That means progressing at a very careful, steady and thoughtful pace so we can closely monitor our progress each step of the way.

Restart plan

As shown in the infographic below, SickKids’ restart plan consists of six incremental phases that will eventually return the hospital to full capacity at a measured pace.

Infographic that shows that out of six incremental phases, the hospital is at 65% limited schedule care capacity as of June 8. Three more phases will result in 100% full ambulatory and operative care. Dates for these three phases are still to be determined.

Restart plan by phase:

  • Phase 1 - 35% - Urgent care only
  • Phase 2 - 50% - Expanded urgent care
  • Phase 3 - 65% - Restart limited scheduled care – As of June 8
  • Phase 4 - 75% - Gradually increase scheduled care
  • Phase 5 - 85% - Most scheduled care available
  • Phase 6 - 100% - Full ambulatory and operative care

As of June 8, SickKids will be in Phase 3 with the limited restart of scheduled clinical care. It will take time to get back on track and there is no predetermined timeframe for moving from one phase to the next, which depends on many related factors, including a stable supply of personal protective equipment and medications, completing any necessary patient testing, ensuring physical distancing where possible and to maintain a healthy workforce.

In addition, like all hospitals, SickKids must always be prepared to reduce activity if necessary and the possibility of having to step back to a prior phase.

We will be contacting patients and families when we are able to reschedule a previously cancelled surgery, procedure or appointment. There is no reason to contact the hospital at this time.

SickKids will continue to monitor COVID-19 cases, be guided by Ontario Health in the community and adjust the plan accordingly.
