Dr. Kelley received his undergraduate medical degree from the University of Birmingham, U.K. in 1997 and completed his surgical residency training Bristol, U.K.. He then travelled the world for two years between 2008-2010 for further fellowship training at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia in 2008 followed by being awarded the first Trans-Canada paediatric orthopaedic fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto; Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Montreal and BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. Kelley joined SickKids in 2010, and soon after completed a PhD in Developmental and Stem Cell Biology. 

Dr. Kelley currently serves in several leadership roles at SickKids including Associate Chief of Perioperative Services – Clinical and Ambulatory, and as the Orthopaedic Fellowship Director. Outside of SickKids he is a Deputy Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the International Hip Dysplasia Institute and in 2020 was elected as the President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society.

Dr. Kelley‘s areas of expertise are those of paediatric hip diseases (particularly hip dysplasia, DDH) and paediatric limb lengthening and reconstruction for children born with severe limb deformities and children who suffer major limb-threatening trauma. He has instigated several innovative programs at SickKids including the multidisciplinary limb lengthening and reconstruction program, bringing in the latest surgical techniques and technologies. In addition, he has also pioneered the one-stop baby hip clinic and the adolescent hip replacement clinic to streamline the care for children with hip dysplasia from the cradle to adulthood.

Research

Dr. Kelley’s clinical research program aims to systematically optimize many of the controversial steps of diagnosis, imaging, treatment and education of hip dysplasia (DDH) in newborns, such that the resulting body of work will provide easy to follow, effective and safe evidence-based management pathways which will help standardise the education and management of DDH globally.

Achievements

Dr. Kelley has won awards for clinical excellence, teaching and research, has presented his research at national and international meetings in North America, Europe and Asia, furthermore he has published over 40 research papers and has written 13 book chapters.
