Elizabeth Harvey

Dr. Elizabeth Harvey received her MD from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1982.  She completed her Paediatric training at Memorial University and Dalhousie University followed by a Paediatric Nephrology Fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), University of Toronto from 1986 to 1988.  She joined the Division of Nephrology at SickKids in 1988.

Research

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a life-long condition with no cure, only treatments that include conservative management with medications and diet modifications, followed by dialysis and/or kidney transplantation. The burden of care is high for children with CKD.  Dr. Harvey's clinical research seeks to optimize dialysis delivery, identify and treat complications of dialysis, and carefully evaluate and appropriately implement new treatments and technologies.

Children with kidney stones are more likely to have a metabolic or inherited cause. A systematic team approach is required to investigate and treat these children: to identify inherited diseases, which, if not treated will result in end stage kidney disease or recurrent stones; to identify risk factors for stone growth; and to prescribe appropriate therapy to prevent new stone formation or growth of existing stones. Together with the Division of Urology and colleagues in the Kidney Stones clinic, Dr. Harvey and team provide combined urological and nephrological assessment to patients with complex stone disease. The urology stone database has allowed analysis of outcomes resulting in scholarly publications.
