Biography

Dr. Peter Gill is a general paediatrician and Scientist at the SickKids Research Institute, an Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics and Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto, and a Senior Associate at the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, University of Oxford. He hold an holds a MD from the University of Alberta, and a DPhil in Primary Health Care and MSc in Evidence-Based Health Care from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

Dr. Gill is a national and emerging international leading researcher in Pediatric Hospital Medicine. He Co-founded and is Vice-Chair of the Canadian Pediatric Inpatient Research Network (PIRN - https://www.pirncanada.com/), which is focused on generating research evidence to improve outcomes of hospitalized children in general pediatric settings. PIRN includes hospital sites affiliated with all 17 academic children’s hospitals across Canada and 10 large community hospitals.

In 2023, he received the Canadian Paediatric Society Young Investigator Award and the Paediatric Chairs of Canada Emerging Academic Leader Award. Dr. Gill is also a member of the BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine and Hospital Pediatrics Editorial Board.

Research

Dr. Gill’s patient-oriented research focuses on generating evidence to improve the care and outcomes of children hospitalized in general pediatric settings. His research has advanced the care and management of common and serious childhood infections, such as bronchiolitis, orbital cellulitis, and SARS-CoV-2, and informed clinical practice guidelines. Dr. Gill’s research also aims to partner with patients to improve care and outcomes, including co-leading studies with parent and youth partners. Lastly, he has led important population-based studies that examine health systems performance for hospitalized children using data from Canada, the US and the UK.  

Dr. Gill has written or co-written more than 135 peer-reviewed research articles. His work has appeared in major journals such as the Lancet, JAMA, BMJ, and CMAJ, among others.
