Kuang-Yueh Chiang

Dr. Kuang-Yueh Chiang joined the Division of Haematology/Oncology in 2016. He received his medical degree at the Kaohsiung Medical College, Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 1982. He subsequently received his PhD in physiology from University of Minnesota in 1989. Chiang continued his paediatric residency and paediatric haematology/oncology/BMT fellowship in University of Minnesota. Chiang then moved to Columbia, South Carolina where he gained extensive experience with partially mismatched (haplo-identical) donor transplant. In 2001, Chiang moved to Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta/Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Research

Chiang's interest in bone marrow stem cells began when he was pursuing his PhD in the laboratory of Drs. Esmail Zanjani and Larry Lasky who introduced the in vitro colony assay, bone marrow microenvironment and the concept of cytokines. Subsequently, he worked in Dr. Catherine Verfaille’s laboratory during his fellowship where he employed various cell selection techniques, long-term culture assays, and mouse transplant models. Chiang continued to developed pre-clinical experiments on the mechanism of G-CSF stimulated bone marrow and was able to translate the findings into clinical patient care.

He is also interested in the application of G-CSF as a chemosensitizing agent as part of the preparative regimen prior to allogeneic bone marrow transplant. Chiang also participated in translational projects (such as in gene therapy for hemophilia and mesenchymal stromal cell infusion for Crohn’s disease).
