ACTS team brings neonatal and paediatric ICU expertise beyond SickKids’ walls
Transporting patients quickly and safely from community hospitals to a tertiary hospital is no simple feat, especially when considering the complex medical needs of a critically-ill child or a premature baby. Since it began in 1973, the Acute Care Transport Services (ACTS) team at SickKids has become a leader in this very specialized service in Canada.

The Centre for Genetic Medicine: helping patients and families solve genetic mysteries
This year we are celebrating the five year anniversary of the SickKids Centre for Genetic Medicine. Founded in 2012, the Centre was established to bring together the brightest minds in genomics, patient care, education, policy and research with the goal of one day making genomic testing and personalized medicine the standard of care for all patients across the hospital.

SickKids closes $300 million offering to fund major infrastructure transformation project
On Monday, December 4, SickKids priced a $300 million offering of Series B Senior Unsecured Debentures and the transaction will close on Thursday, December 7. This is the largest offering by a Canadian hospital or university in the bond market to date.

Insufficient evidence to guide recommendations on vitamin D in pregnancy
A team led by Dr. Daniel Roth, a clinician-scientist in the Department of Paediatrics and the Centre for Global Child Health at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), found there are still unanswered questions about effects of prenatal vitamin D supplementation on the health of pregnant women and their offspring.

Baby Carter recovers hearing after cochlear implant surgery at only 3 months of age
A ‘magical life-changing moment’ is how parents describe the day their son Carter’s cochlear implants were ‘turned on’ for the first time. Carter Holland, now six months old, received bilateral cochlear implants when he was just three months of age, and is believed to be the youngest person in Canada to undergo this procedure to restore hearing in both of his ears.

Farah Sheikh, social worker in the Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Programs at SickKids, shares her perspective on helping raise awareness of the emotional and social challenges faced by patients living with a facial difference in their schools, community and in their everyday lives.
