New discovery finds potential non-antibiotic treatment for cancer-causing bacteria

H. pylori is high on the WHO's list of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that pose the greatest threats to human health. This research has shown that harnessing the cell’s own ability to eliminate bacteria inside of stomach cells could be a potential new treatment for H. pylori infection.

How a small worm helped unravel a big mystery in rare disease

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM)​ is a rare disease that causes anomalies in tiny capillaries that transport blood throughout the brain. Currently, there is no clinically approved therapy to treat this disease, which led a team at SickKids to use a small nematode worm, C. elegans, to help identify molecules that might allow for treatment of this currently incurable disease.

Dr. Stephen Scherer awarded Killam prize, top health sciences award in Canada

One of The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids)’s own was awarded the Killam Prize in health sciences today. Dr. Stephen Scherer, Director, The Centre for Applied Genomics (TCAG) and Senior Scientist, Genetics & Genome Biology, joins the prestigious group of Canadians who have received this award.
