SickKids has contributed to the development of best practice guidelines around a rare disorder affecting one in 2,000 to 3,000 live births: congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). In cases of CDH, the internal organs in the abdominal cavity push through a weakened area in the diaphragm to travel into the chest cavity, which then interferes with lung development.

SickKids-led team sheds more light on new autoinflammatory disease
An international research collaboration led by SickKids has released their latest research project on a cohort with a rare autoinflammatory disease, A20 hapolinsufficiency (HA20). SickKids, along with their National Institutes of Health (NIH) collaborators in Washington, D.C., was the first to report on the mutated gene responsible for HA20 in 2016.

SickKids and Holland Bloorview to offer SDR services in Ontario
The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (Holland Bloorview) are pleased to announce the launch of a three-year joint integrated selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) program in Ontario. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care today announced funding for SDR in the province, which will now offer care close to home.

Baby Carter recovers hearing after cochlear implant surgery at only 3 months of age
A ‘magical life-changing moment’ is how parents describe the day their son Carter’s cochlear implants were ‘turned on’ for the first time. Carter Holland, now six months old, received bilateral cochlear implants when he was just three months of age, and is believed to be the youngest person in Canada to undergo this procedure to restore hearing in both of his ears.
