Simulation Workshops

This 2-day interprofessional workshop covers the fundamentals to assist with the development and delivery of simulation-based education. The learner will gain knowledge of the theory and models of debriefing as well as the best practices for facilitating high fidelity simulations. Through practical experience within the workshop, learners will be able to develop the skills required to deliver effective simulations.

Upon completion of this workshop, the learner should be able to:

• Describe simulation-based learning.
• Outline the role and responsibilities of the Simulation Instructor.
• Identify the planning process and resources necessary to run an effective simulation.
• Apply various models of debriefing.

This 4-hour workshop gives you the opportunity to learn more about scenario development and build your expertise in simulation-based education.

Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

• Describe the principles of simulation-based learning.
• Outline the role and responsibilities of the simulation instructor.
• Identify the key components for developing simulation scenarios.
• Identify the planning process and resources necessary to run an effective simulation.
• Develop a scenario.

This one-day interprofessional workshop covers the fundamentals of video debriefing. The learner will gain knowledge of the theory and models of video debriefing. Through practical experience within the workshop, learners will be able to develop the skills required to deliver effective video debriefing.

Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

• Review and reflect on theories of adult learning in relation to video debriefing.
• Use video debriefing to assist learners cognitively process the simulation experience and relate to expected and unexpected learning objectives.
• Guide and coach learners in reflective practice (with the use of video) to explore and clarify the cognitive frames, and emotions that governed the trainee’s actions and behaviors.
• Address misconceptions held around video debriefing.
• Demonstrate and practice video-based debriefing.

A prerequisite for the workshop is that you have some knowledge and previous experience with debriefing. This workshop can be applied for credit towards Simulation Instructor or Simulation Associate Instructor credentialing. This activity is an Accredited Simulation Activity (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of The Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the SickKids Simulation Program.

This 2-hour workshop provides an introduction to the features and use of medium fidelity simulators and equipment. Throughout the course the learner will have the opportunity to operate medium fidelity manikins and equipment with hands on experience setting up the equipment, and an opportunity to run scenarios in a mock practice.

Upon completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

• Recall the features of medium fidelity simulator’s and task trainers.
• Assemble and operate medium fidelity equipment.
• Facilitate manual and automatic scenarios.
