Background and clinical significance

Tobramycin is one of the aminoglycoside class of bactericidal drugs, also including streptomycin, neomycin, netilmycin, sisomycin, gentamicin, kanamycin, and amikacin. Due to toxic effects associated with aminoglycosides manifest as delayed-onset vestibular and cochlear sensory cell destruction and acute renal tubular necrosis, the goal of monitoring is to maintain therapeutic plasma concentration at minimum risk to patients.
