About the Clinic

The PICU Follow-Up Clinic assesses children and youth who have received medical care in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Our team is here to support the health and well-being of your child and family throughout recovery from severe illness.

Why is follow-up important after your child’s stay in the PICU?

The PICU Follow-Up Clinic will look at how your child is recovering after their serious illness. We will determine what they might need to get better, both now and in the future.

You will meet with doctors and nurses who are prepared to identify and address any needs related from recovery from critical childhood illness. They can help you and your child identify and overcome any obstacles that arise.

Directions

After registering at the main atrium desk take the Atrium elevators to the 6th floor and follow the signs to the 6D clinic waiting area. Check in with reception upon arrival.

Contacting the clinic

Please provide a 72-hour notice if you cannot make your appointment. If you're unable to attend your appointment on the scheduled day, kindly call 416-813-7654 ext. 206494 to inform the team.

If you have an urgent medical question or concern, please contact your primary health-care provider or go to the nearest emergency department. Please note that the clinic voicemail box is not monitored regularly.

What to Expect

Follow-up phone call

The Clinical Nurse Specialist will call you once you're at home to:

identify any immediate concerns, questions or challenges you may be experiencing
provide information or resources you may need

Let us know if your child experiences anxiety or sensory challenges or would benefit from child life support during your clinic visit.
Ask about things that you notice are different about your child.
Tell us if a virtual visit works better for your child and family's needs.
Notify us if online forms cannot be completed before clinic.
Ask questions to understand how PICU follow-up care is helping your child.

Preparing for your appointment

Complete the pre-visit questionnaires that were sent to you by email.
Remember to bring your child’s health card with you.
Bring your child’s glasses, hearing aid, or communication devices.
Contact the Clinic Coordinator with any questions via myChart.
Bring a list of your child’s medications.

At the clinic

You will be seen by members of the PICU follow-up team to:

review any medications and therapies your child is currently receiving
discuss any medical questions or concerns you have
explore any impacts on you as caregivers, and on other family members
complete additional questionnaires based on findings from the visit

Please expect to spend 1.5–3 hours at the PICU Follow-Up Clinic depending on your child’s needs.
Two caregivers may attend the clinic.
Siblings that come to hospital should wait in the WAV PlayPark during the visit.

After your appointment

Your child or family may benefit from further focused assessment or continuing medical, developmental, learning or social support.

The clinic team may give recommendations and referrals to specialists and/or community agencies that can provide ongoing services for the child.
