About the Clinic
The Ambulatory Severe Asthma Program within the Division of Respiratory Medicine provides comprehensive asthma care to children with moderate to severe asthma. Our interprofessional team consists of paediatric pulmonologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists/certified asthma educators and a social worker to offer a team approach to treating and managing children and adolescents with severe asthma.
Patients with moderate to severe asthma may be referred to this clinic by a health-care practitioner within the hospital or in the community. Referrals will be triaged in a timely manner.
Asthma is a common childhood illness and as such, we must limit our clinic to patients with:
- Severe and/or difficult to treat asthma
- Uncontrolled asthma despite a three to six-month trial of asthma management
- More than one hospitalization, two (2) emergency visits or two (2) courses of oral corticosteroids in the last year.
- Preschool children less than three (3) years old who have persistent asthma symptoms between viral infections
- Children or adolescents being considered for biologic therapies
