The team is multidisciplinary, comprised of two surgeons, a nurse practitioner, inpatient and outpatient nurses, a child life specialist, occupational and physiotherapists, social workers, a dietitian, a psychologist, administrative staff, researchers, and more.

  • Medical Director: Dr. Joel Fish
  • Staff Surgeon: Dr. Eduardo Gus
  • Nurse Practitioner: Charis Kelly

Services

Outpatient Burn Clinic

The outpatient clinic is where many of our burns can be managed. The types of appointments that occur in the outpatient clinic include scar management, rehabilitation therapy, and some simple dressing changes. Patients may also visit with other members of the multidisciplinary burn team at clinic appointments such as social work, child life, and dieticians. Learn more about what to expect when visiting the Burn Clinic.

New referrals

  • All patients require a referral to visit our clinic
  • New burns as well as burn scars from previous accidents (e.g., burn scar reconstructions) can also be referred

Urgent referrals

Please note: if the referral is a self-referral or regarding an urgent or very recent burn, please call or email Sandy Davies in Dr. Joel Fish's office at 416-813-7654 ext. 228198 to discuss the referral prior to submitting it.

How to refer a patient

Inpatient Plastics/Burns Unit

Burns requiring admission to hospital are cared for on 8C in the Plastics/Burns Unit. This would include any burn requiring comprehensive wound care, pain management, complex rehabilitation, and/or nutritional optimization.
The burn team assesses and triages each burn patient and admits them based on their needs. More specifically, the team assesses risk factors, pain management, ability to cope with the burn injury, and family support to help inform the plan of care.

Burn Survivor Annual Events

At various times of the year, SickKids Burn Program teams up with Toronto Fire Services to host events across the city for burn and fire prevention.

Each June we host a very special picnic for burn survivors and their families. It’s a fun-filled day with games, prizes, and opportunities for families of burn survivors to connect.

This is a very special day where burn survivors and their families use the connections they have made to help them deal with daily issues that arise from living with a burn injury. It's a time for sharing information, learning new ideas, discussing challenges, and having a lot of fun.

This full day conference is for the burn survivor (children as well as adult) and their families. The day is put together by the burn teams at SickKids and Sunnybrook Hospital's Ross Tilley Burn Centre. The conference is a way of providing information as well as coping skills to help burn survivors and their family members deal with a burn injury. All age groups are invited. Daycare is provided.

"Family Day" takes place every October at the Toronto Fire Training Academy, 895 Eastern Avenue.

If you are interested in attending or would like more information, please email burn.events@sickkids.ca.

This group is a six-week virtual “Aftercare” program for patients ages nine and up. Our goal is to follow up with the emotional well-being of burn survivors, provide children with the opportunity to connect with other children who have gone through a similar experience, and facilitate an open discussion in a safe space.

If you’re interested in this program or have any questions, please contact Maureen Carney, CCLS, at maureen.carney@sickkids.ca.

Camp Bucko is afree camp for kids that is specifically geared for burn survivors under the age of 17. The camp runs every August for one week and offers sports events, therapeutic activities and more. Learn more about Camp Bucko.
