Colin Macarthur

Colin Macarthur completed his medical training at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and doctoral training in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McGill University, Canada. Macarthur is currently a Senior Scientist in The Hospital for Sick Children’s Research Institute in the Child Health Evaluative Sciences Program.

From 2012-2017, Macarthur was Associate Chief Clinical Research at The Hospital for Sick Children, and previous to that (2004-2011), he was Vice President of Research at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, and inaugural Director of the Bloorview Research Institute. Macarthur is a Professor in the Department of Paediatrics and the Department of Health Policy Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. His area of research interest is the epidemiology and prevention of childhood injury.

Macarthur has secured operating grant support from CIHR, NSERC, and ONF, and co-authored over 140 original articles. He was a founding a Board Member and Chair of the Quality Committee for Parachute - a national injury prevention organization - and was previously an editorial board member for the journal Injury Prevention.

Research

Dr. Macarthur leads an independent program of research on childhood injury prevention. The focus of this program of research is on the epidemiology of childhood injury. The aim of the research program is to quantify the burden of injury, identify modifiable etiologic factors, critically evaluate injury prevention strategies, and support and promote evidence-informed injury prevention interventions.

Injury is the leading cause of death and disability among children in Canada, with more deaths from injury than from all other causes combined. It has been estimated that for every injury death there are 45 hospital admissions and 1,300 visits to the emergency department because of injury.
