Ibuprofen, serum

Ibuprofen is classified with the Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Agents. It is grouped with the Propionic acid derivitives along with Fenoprofen and Naproxen. The major effect of the NSAID's is to decrease the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase. Prostaglandins enhance the inflammatory response, renal blood flow and cytoprotection of the GI mucosa.  Ibuprofen is metabolized in man by oxidation of the isobutyl group resulting in two major metabolites: 2-hydroxyibuprofen and 2-carboxyibuprofen. Toxicity symptoms include: headache, tinnitus, drowsiness, nausea and abdominal pain. Severe toxicity is reported mainly in children and symptoms may include: seizures, apnea, hypertension and renal and hepatic dysfunction.
