Glomerular Disorders (GD) Clinic

The GD Clinic cares for patients with a variety of different conditions that affect the filtering units of the kidney, the glomeruli. Our clinic has as an interdisciplinary team, including doctors, nurses, dietitians and social workers. We have multiple physicians, who are world specialists in this field; they work as a group to provide you with the best possible care. We are committed to delivering leading-edge specialized care and work alongside researchers to constantly improve our treatments. The clinic runs Monday and Thursday mornings only. New patients must be referred by a physician.   

Important pre-appointment instructions: 

Some children take medications that require drug levels to be monitored. If you know your child takes such a medicine, please wait until after blood work to give the morning dose.   

Your child is permitted to eat and drink unless you have been called in advance for fasting blood work. 

We will require a urine sample. Please ask at the registration desk for a urine collection container if your child needs to pee prior to the appointment. If you have a baby or child in diapers, please ask us for a urine bag. 

Directions: 

The GD Clinic is part of the Nephrology Clinic, located on the Main Floor, near the Black Wing Elevators. From the University Avenue entrance, walk in, turn right at the first hallway and stand in front of the Shoppers Drug Mart entrance. Walk straight past the Black Wing elevators and turn down the first hallway to your left. The Nephrology Clinic is the first clinic you will find on the left side of the hallway. 

From the Elizabeth Street Entrance and parking garage elevators, walk west (down Main Street) towards Shoppers Drug Mart. At the Family Centre/Library turn right. We are the first clinic you will find on the left side of this hallway. 

You will register at the clinic front desk upon arrival, and will be given requisitions for a urine sample and blood work (if needed). The clerk will let you know if any special testing or other appointments are booked to take place that day. 

You will collect the urine sample in the bottle provided and drop it in the blue bin with the urine requisition. If your child is in diapers, you can ask one of the clinic nurses to put a urine collection bag on your child. If blood work is needed, you will go to the Phlebotomy Clinic (Blood Work), just to the right of Shoppers Drug Mart. Once all testing is complete, you will return to the front desk to let them know you are done. You will then be asked to wait in the blue chairs back in the main hallway across from the Family Centre. A nurse will call your name when it is your turn to come into clinic. 

The nurse will check height, weight and blood pressure measurements. Once measurements are done you will move into another room to meet with the doctors. As this is a teaching hospital you will likely see a resident or fellow who will do an initial assessment and ask you some questions. Then you will see a staff physician who will let you know how your child’s kidney is doing and our plan going forward. 

Please make sure you get new prescriptions for any kidney medications before leaving. 

Appointments may take several hours depending on which tests we require. We appreciate your patience.
