Pre-appointment Instructions

Directions:

To register, please come directly to the Dental Clinic and check in at the front desk. The Dental Clinic is located on the Service Level in the hospital’s Roy C. Hill Wing, Room S530. Take the elevator directly across from Shoppers Drug Mart down to the Service Level (press “S” for service in the elevator). From there, follow the signs in the direction of the Roy C. Hill Wing and the Department of Dentistry. The clinic is almost at the end of the hallway, Room S530.

What to Expect During Your Visit

After arriving at the Department of Dentistry, you will register with the clerks at the front desk. You will be asked to fill out a selection of forms regarding contact information, insurance coverage and your child’s medical history. Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete necessary paperwork prior to your appointment.

During your appointment, you will meet with many members from the dental/orthodontic team. This team includes a staff dentist and/or orthodontist, hygienists, dental assistants and dental fellows/residents. Depending on the nature of your appointment, the appointment length will vary. Initial appointments include: consultations, pre-palate assessments, Ministry of Health eligibility, post-operative assessments and team assessments.

The initial appointment will begin with a discussion with the dental/orthodontic team regarding the patient’s medical history and the reason for the visit. The dentist/orthodontist will then perform an examination and potentially take X-rays. This examination typically does not involve any treatment being completed – it is strictly for the purpose of assessing your child’s dental health and oral hygiene.

After the dentist/orthodontist has completed their examination and X-rays, they will have a detailed discussion with you regarding these findings. Some topics we may talk about include: what we saw, why the problem may be happening, advice on brushing habits and diet, and any future treatment that may be required. You will have time to ask questions and give feedback on your child’s dental/orthodontic treatment plan.

At the end of the appointment, you will be brought into the accounting office to review coverage and make any payments if necessary. Please remember, dental treatment is not included in OHIP coverage. If you have private insurance or government assistance, please ensure that you have all the necessary information available at the time of the appointment.

If referrals or follow-up appointments are needed, the booking clerk will be available to assist you with scheduling any future appointments. In total, the initial appointment will take approximately an hour.
