Biography

Dr. Karen Thomas graduated from the University of Oxford Medical School, England, and obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (Paediatric) in 1993. She entered radiological training at St. Mary’s Hospital, London, and completed her paediatric radiology fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children in 2000. After a short interval at Great Ormond Street Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital, London, U.K., she returned to take up a staff position in the body imaging group. 

Research

Thomas's research focuses on radiation safety in children - practical, strategic and educational aspects of radiation safety and dose reduction in children's imaging.

She has developed a wide-ranging research interest in the practical, strategic and educational aspects of radiation safety and dose reduction in paediatric imaging, with clinical impact on dose reduction and optimisation of practice within the Department of Diagnostic Imaging SickKids, in addition to contributing towards current international efforts to improve physician, manufacturer and public awareness.

Her research activities have included various direct and indirect dosimetry studies, patient cohort cumulative dose estimation, innovation of new MDCT body scanning protocols and intravenous contrast regimes, CT image quality analysis with iterative reconstruction, and physician and caregiver radiation dose awareness surveys.
